Welcome to the Galloway Ladies County Golf Association!
Founded in 1972, the Galloway Ladies currently hail from 13 wonderful golf clubs in Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire. Holding the first competition at Wigtown & Bladnoch on Sunday 8th October, 1972 with winner Mrs M Stephen with 91 (22) 69.
How it all started:
In March 1972 at a meeting attended by representatives from all clubs in Galloway it was unanimously agreed to form the Galloway Ladies County Golf Association with the purpose to further the interest of keen lady golfers and girls in the area.
In doing so Galloway joined Dumfriesshire Ladies County Golf Association and Border Ladies County Golf Association to form the South Division in Scottish County Golf.
51 Ladies joined the newly formed Association.
The first competition was held at Wigtown and Bladnoch Golf Club later that year.
In 1973 the first full season introduced a full schedule of events including a Spring Meeting, a County Championship and an Autumn Meeting.
1973 also saw the first Inter County Match played.
Scotland has 15 County Associations which are divided into 4 Divisions, North, South, East and West.
As previously mentioned Galloway, Dumfriesshire and Borders form the South Division.
The West Division is comprised of Ayrshire, Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire and Dumbarton and Argyll.
The East Division is comprised of East Lothian, Midlothian, Fife and Stirling and Clackmannan.
The North Division is comprised of Angus, Aberdeenshire, Highlands and Perth and Kinross.
We in the South Division used to play our matches on a Home and Away basis. In recent years we like all the other Divisions now play our matches over 3 consecutive days in a jamboree.
County Matches take the format of 3 Foursomes matches played in the morning and 6 singles matches in the afternoon all played off scratch.
Each County has a team of 8 players who are chosen before the event. From these 8 players the Team Captain chooses her 3 pairings to play the Foursomes and at lunchtime chooses her 6 players to play the singles.
At the conclusion of the matches in the Jamborees the winning County from each Division qualifies for the County Finals. Play at the finals follows the same format.
Galloway has successfully qualified for the Finals on several occasions the most recent being in 2022 at Kirkcaldy when they finished a very creditable third.
The Galloway Ladies Association is very active in encouraging girls in the sport and thanks to Professionals Chris Robinson and Stuart Fisher we continue to see the development of future Association team members.
In 2023 membership of the Association stands at 44 ladies and 3 junior members. All who join and play enjoy the friendship and camaraderie.
New members are very welcome.
